a face from the past

heavy make up

to hide the wounds

still bleeding out of your eyes

I wish I could penetrate

those layers of grease and paint

but you need them

to protect you from what you want

the shield is too dense

your tight costume had become an armour

and the loss I felt for the one I knew

is draining down the gutter

while I’m cleaning my face

of the little spots and blotches

the day has left

I smile back

at the woman

whose laughter filled a room

the girl with the hole in her middle

a door to a nowhere

that is not mine to explore
