#197 (a meaning in cruelty)

small hands

broken before

they even learnt

how to hold a pen

or grab a spoon

a blind spot

silenced history

an abandoned generation

left to find

a meaning in cruelty

their frightened whispers

echoe through the decades

searching for answers

to questions most

won’t even dare

to ask

small hands

broken before

they have mended

covered the suffering

with scar tissue

their stories hidden behind

the fading traces

of trauma

    1. Thank you! It was inspired by a radio feature. The sad truth behind it is that many children in the GDR didn’t really get to know their parents (some only weeks old) because they spent Mo-Fr in boarding school like institutions called “Wochenkrippen” so their mothers could support the socialist state with their labour.
