#308 (my mother’s lessons)

My mother taught me

to take everything personal

to waltz out of a room

once feeling attacked.

I forgot that lesson

My mother taught me

that although I am her child

the other ones are probably right

so I must be wrong.

I forgave that lesson

My mother taught me

to listen to the nuances of speech

the words lurking in the pauses

the unspoken ones that create

all the difference.

I will never forgo that lesson
